The full title of this thread is Battlestar Galactica (or another episode of NiallNai is thick)

So I was thinking that the whole concept of Battlestar Galactica (the new one) could be taken for Hellas with the Machina taking the part of the Cylons.

Then it struck me. Cylons, cyclops. The whole one roving red eye. Along with the whole Greek gods motif and being set adrift trying to find their way home.

Am I late to the party with this? I think I must be. Is it really possible that a cheesy Star Wars rip off from the late '70s could have been taken from Greek myth and Homer?

Late to the party I’m afraid.

BSG has a lot of mythic and religious undercurrents running through it. Look at the original show (stop before Galactica 1980) and you will see cameos by the devil, a bit of Mormon theology, and some Greek myth. Very good stuff.

Most of the stuff in the original series has been stripped out but there are stil a lot of myth driven themes in the show.

Hullo, NiallNai,

Yep, as I understand it, the original BattleStar Galactica series was based somewhat on Greek myth and stuff, and hence the Cylons with the one eye (Cylon=Cyclops), but also incorporated all kinds of other cultural stuff in it, if you look past the disco era style accoutrements and other stuff.

The new series has gone in a lot more "modern" interpretation of stuff, as well as having its basis in some of the more famous conflicts of recent history, but the mythological elements are still there, just somewhat subsumed.
