LITE WORKS
Jamie Phelps was a good lad, his grades were above average, he was captain for the football team, the basket ball team and a member of the track and field team. His parents were proud of him and his little brother adored and hero worshiped him. Life was good for Jamie until the accident.
He had just finished track training after school and was walking home, it was sunny and there were lots of local kids out in the street playing. In the distance Jamie could here the sirens of a police car as well as the ding dong of an ice cream van.
As he carried on walking he was lost in thought running over tactics for the next football match. So engrossed was he that he didn’t hear the police siren getting louder and louder until it with a screech of tires it rounded the corner at the end of the street. Looking up he took in the scene before him, in that split second he noticed three things first the police car second the ice cream van parked half way up the street and third the five year old with an ice cream stepping out from behind the van. In a instant, without a thought to himself Jamie launched into a sprint across the street towards the child. With seconds to spare he grabbed the child and throw him out of harms way just as the police car hit him.
Eye witnesses said later in their statements that Jamie must have been thrown at least 20 foot into the air from the impact, some wept at having to recount the noise he made as his body hit the pavement, all agreed he was a hero for saving the young deaf boy.
In the hospital the A & E team fought to save him, his parents were there with his brother waiting for any news on his condition. Finally after 5 hours of emergency surgery they were allowed to see him in the critical care unit.
The doctor gave his condolences to the family saying due to his extensive injuries it was highly unlikely Jamie would survive the next 24 hours and if they wished the hospital chaplain could be called to sit with them.
Jamie’s brother couldn’t believe it he held Jamie’s hand and whispered over and over again “come back Jamie we can’t go on without you, I need you please don’t die”
24 hours later Jamie was still hanging in there his brother by his side holding onto his hand, refusing to leave his bed side having food brought to him.
48 hours came and went and still no sign, good or bad. Soon hours turned to days, days to months, months to years. The family tried to continue their life but it was hard, 5 months after the accident Jamie was transferred to a care home, every day after school his brother would visit and speak to him, encouraging him to return to him. Soon the situation took its toll on the family his mother and father divorced his brother living with his father so he could be near Jamie.
Five years after the accident early one sunny morning as an ice cream van passed by the care home its bell ringing, Jamie Phelps stretched and opened his eyes. Within an hour the family was there everyone hugging and crying and welcoming him back. It was hard at first for Jamie he had difficulty getting it into his head that five years had gone by to him it seemed like a day. He remembered the child and running towards him, remembered the police car hitting him and then waking up in the care home.
Over the following months of convalescing he started to have dreams, first they would be at night then after a few weeks they started to appear when he was awake. It was always the same he was floating in a grey mist he could see someone in front of him standing as if waiting for him. In the far reaches of his mind he could also hear his brother’s voice but couldn’t make out what he was saying.
As part of his rehabilitation he had to see a councillor these dreams he decided not to mention in his sessions. A year later he was allowed home. By then his brother was going to college and offered to get a place with him so he could have some independence. So with a suitcase full of prescription drugs Jamie moved in with his brother.
One night a few months later Jamie’s dreams changed, now he was standing In front of the figure, still unable to see him but able to hear his words.
“Jamie, don’t be afraid. I have been searching the universe for a long time looking for someone like you, someone who would put his life on the line in a selfless act for someone he didn’t know.”
“ I have little time left in this dimension before I’m found and brought back to stand trail on my own world”
“ You are dead you were the moment the car hit you but I stopped the progress, I want to offer you a chance to carry on the selfless act you preformed, to become a light in a dark world, one that will one day be darker still if the creatures after me have their way.”
“ I have here an item that is of great value to them it also holds great power. I believe you have the soul to be able to harness this power for good.”
Just then behind the figure specks of darkness appear, following Jamie’s eyes the figure staggers slightly.
“No its too soon I need time to prepare you. I’m sorry Jamie Phelps there is no other way.”
And with that he opens his hand to reveal a small blue glowing ball of light. In one quick instance the figure thrusts his and into Jamie’s chest. The pain seems never ending. Looking up he finally looks into the eyes of an old man, in his bright blue eyes is reflected the pain Jamie feels, mouthing the words sorry he removes his hand and pushes the boy backwards with great force. Jamie goes tumbling over and over the last image he sees of the old man is of him shining blue in the missed surrounded by creature too grotesque for words to describe.
Screaming Jamie wakes in a cold sweat in his bed in the flat he shares with his brother.
After that night the dreams stopped and life went back to normal, Jamie stopped taking his medication fearing it to be the course of his dreams. He went back to the gym to get fit and back to college to finish his studies. The following year he took up a position as a coach at the local school.
Things were going well until he started seeing them. First it was out of the corner of his eye just at the periphery of his vision but when he turned to look it was just some person walking passed or sitting on a bench. Soon they were more obvious, looking in a shop window he would see a creature standing behind him but upon turning it would be a only someone looking in the same window.
Then things took a turn for the worse, coming out of the school one day he saw one of the creatures putting a boy into the back of a car, not believing what he was seeing he closed his eyes and took a long breath looking again at the car it was driving away slow sedately. Jamie realised it must just have been a father picking up his son.
The next morning it was the talk of the school, the teachers were called to an emergency meeting, the head told them that the night before one of the boys was abducted from outside the school and the police would want to question everyone for possible witnesses. Jamie went cold with fear and dread. Could what he have witnessed be true could those creature really exist.
That night he sat at home trying to remember what he had seen, getting up he went to wash his face, looking in the mirror he saw a very pale image of himself looking back but with one difference his eyes were bright blue in colour. Blinking he looked again he stared into those deep blue pools, all of a sudden he was back at the school watching the child being kidnapped by the creature. This time he moved, in a blue flash he was following the car as if floating above it. For an hour he followed until it stopped at an old abandon mill outside town. Looking through the window he saw five creatures gathered round the frightened child.
Suddenly Jamie was once again looking at himself in the mirror this time his eyes were their normal hazel colour.
