When I was a young lad, probably only 5 or 6 years old in the early eighties Marvel reprinted the original X-Men line (only in Britain I think) and this started a super hero fascination for me. Despite some of the weirder and less consistent changes in the comic book throughout the years X-Men has remained my favourite in the genre, the characters and the themes strike a chord (Black October is also my favourite Godsend Agenda "splat", for many of the same thematic reasons). That in mind I'd like to present a small selection of stats for the original X-Men. All these stats represent the X-Men as at issue 1 of the original X-Men comic book series, not at today’s date. They are young, green and relatively powerless compared to their modern incarnation. Marvel Girl has not yet been touched by the Phoenix, Angel has yet to lose his wings and become Archangel, and the Beast has never even thought about being blue and furry. The stats have been generated using the rules for humans on page 113 of the rule book, and for simplicity I have used the 50% off option on each of their main powers (Cyclops’ energy blast, Marvel Girl’s TK, Iceman’s ice manipulation, Angel’s flight, Beast’s prehensile feet and Professor X’s telepathy). For the sake of completism, for anyone looking to recreate the events of issue 1 there’s a bonus set of stats at the bottom belonging to the mighty Master of Magnetism himself, Magneto!

About Angel:
At this stage in the X-Men’s young lives Angel is the only one with any history as a hero. Initially freaked out when puberty brought large white-feathered wings, he soon became greatly enamoured of the new vistas it brought. After using his abilities to save fellow students from a fire he embarked on a brief heroic career as “The Avenging Angel” before being recruited by Professor X. Angel comes from old money, although at this stage in his life he has limited access to the family fortune. In addition to the sixteen-foot span wings on his back (which he keeps strapped against his body when in civilian ID) he also has exceptionally acute eyesight, and hollow bones which assist in his flying, and protect him from painful falls. He is light-hearted and fun loving, and tries to be charming- especially with the arrival of the lovely Miss Jean Grey.

About the Beast:
The eldest of the original X-Men, Henry McCoy’s mutant abilities are also the subtlest of all the team’s powers. Although he is undoubtedly the muscle of the group, and physically the most intimidating, it is easy to underestimate the great intellect already being nurtured which will one day lead to a doctorate and recognition as one of the world’s greatest biochemists. The Beast has extremely large hands and feet, and his feet are as capable of fine manipulation as his hands. He is also extremely strong (although not in the superhuman range just yet, that would come later) and inhumanly agile.

About Cyclops:
Scott Summers lost his family in a plane crash when he was a child and grew up in orphanages, lacking any kind of stable family life. Due to brain trauma inflicted in the crash he now cannot fully control has Optic Blasts, and must hide his eyes behind a visor or glasses made of ruby quartz. As Cyclops he is the most devoted of the X-Men to Professor X’s dream of peaceful human-mutant coexistence and was the first recruit to the X-Men. His sole mutant power is the Optic Blast, a powerful beam of concussive force projected from his eyes, using his visor he regulates the outpu of his blasts, and is already capable at using it. On a personal level, Scott’s background has made him fairly withdrawn and he has obvious difficulty relating to others. He is, like his team mates, fascinated with the newest arrival at Xavier’s- Jean Grey.

He was rescued from a mob by Professor X and Cyclops when his powers first manifested, and was recruited to both Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and the X-Men. At this early stage he has not mastered his powers, and could almost be called “Snowman” rather than Iceman but remains effective as one of the biggest hitters in the young team. He frustrates his team mates with his almost incessant practical joking and relentless cheerfulness, coming across like an annoying younger brother much of the time.
