View Full Version : Plagiarize and Mangle!(tm): A New Game Begins!

Okay folks here is an easy one:
Plagiarize a well-known text or monologue from theater or film. Slightly modify it so that it applies to an unrelated subject matter. Examples already appear in this forum, including some of your favorite quotes from The Grapes of Wrath, Blade Runner, Sling Blade and some Platonic Goat thing.
Scoring is as follows:
1 point for posting a qualifying quote.
3 points for the first person in the thread who identifies the source of the quote.
6 points for mangling a famous quote from the year 1879.
-1 point for misidentifying a quote.
-2 points for going back and editing any of your posts pertinent to the game of Plagiarize and Mangle!(tm).
-3 points for a quote that is not successfully identified. This can be used to reign in those players who think they can race ahead by simply posting a ton of properly mangled quotes.
-7 points for using anything by Frank Dec as a source text for quotes.
Bonus points can only be claimed after the correct guess has been made. If no one guesses correctly, bonus points are not awarded for the quote.
Bonus points:
+1 point for posting a qualifying quote that appears in more than one unrelated source.
+1 point for posting a qualifying quote that is guessed correctly on the first guess.
+1 point for guessing correctly on the first guess.
+1 point for guessing the quote correctly by responding with another recognizable yet also mangled quote from the same text.
ONE MORE BIG RULE: QUOTES MAY BE POSTED ANYWHERE ON THE FORUM BUT ALL "GUESSES" MUST APPEAR IN THE SAME THREAD WHERE THE ORIGINAL QUOTE APPEARS.

Good boy, Jeff! That is a plagiarized and mangled quote from The Empire Strikes Back!
Thus, you get 1 point for a qualifying quote, and I get 3 points for identifying the quote! Additionally, I get 1 bonus point for guessing correctly on the first guess. And you get 1 bonus point for posting a quote that inspires the correct guess on the first try!
Isn't this great?
Thus, Cappy has 4 points, Jeff has 2, and everyone else has zer0! (but what else is new?)
Had I chosen instead to reply with "Post it up, Jeffball. (Empire Strikes Back)" I would have picked up an additional bonus point!
But I didn't do that.

D'oh! Sneaky Ken. You screwed me up. Nice block! Of course, you get -1 for misidentifying the quote. It isn't from Star Wars. Both Jeff and I are not allowed the "right first guess" bonus point.
Ergo, Cappy 3, Jeff 1 and Ken -1.
Hey, I demand a review by the . . . um . . Review Committee. I argue that the term "Star Wars" applies to all 5 movies since, after all, The Empire Strikes back is merely an episode of Star Wars. I passed my drug test! I demand my gold medal back! And my two points!

Under your logic, guessing "a movie" would also score, since all movies are movies and therefore are the most accurate answer. Besides, if I allowed your guess to count, I'd get zero points.
That will not fly with the Review Committee.
I direct you to Rule 18.1-17 Subsection a.: Be really really clear in your guess, and guessing the overarching title of a series of episodes is not necessarily really really clear.
On the cool side, Ken, you do, in fact earn two points because They Live! Course, that means I get four points ("right first guess" bonus plus right guess).
